Godfried Dold (partnered with Brooks)

Madison, Indiana circa 1867-1875 & 1890-1900

Godfried Dold was a native of Baden (Germany) who, with other members of his family came to this county and settled in Louisville, Kentucky shortly before 1850. In 1852, Godfried Dold was listed as a watchmaker at the shop of Englebert Grieshaber. By 1854, Dold had moved to Madison, Indiana, and likely worked for a time in one of the local jewelry establishments. In that year he purchased a town lot from a Sarah Drake. In 1856, Dold was in business for himself and so advertised in the Dollar Weekly Courier (Madison, Oct. 22), offering silver hunting watches. His shop was located on Main Cross Street, below Broadway. Godfried Dold continued in business in Madison for many years, either alone or in partnership with Frederick O. Brooks, a silversmith of that city. The firm of Brooks and Dold apparently prospered, and they seemed to have made a considerable amount of silverware, some of which is still extant. The above partnership endured from 1866 until circa 1874. In 1890, however, Brooks and Dold joined forces again and the business bearing their names was still in business in 1896.
