A jeweler and businessman of Indianapolis, J. Mclene was working for the firm of E.]. Baldwin & Co., jewelers of Indianapolis, in 1855. He later became a partner in that business which lasted until about 1860. In 1864 he was a partner in the firm of Mclene & Herron, and in 1875, that business became known as Mclene & Northrup. By 1877, the firm was again called McLene & Herron.
