James R. Tillotson
James R. Tillotson
Terre Haute, Indiana circa 1864-1877
A member of a family of silversmiths and watchmakers, James R. Tillotson was likely the son of Elijah Tillotson, Jr. who with his father Elijah Tillotson, Sr., came to Terre Haute in 1822. James Tillotson was in the silversmith and jewelry business in Terre Haute by 1859, and by 1864 his shop employed at least two other silversmiths. This strongly suggests that Tillotson was engaged in the manufacture of silverware and jewelry items. Silver spoons bearing the mark “J.R. Tillotson” are extant. Tillotson maintained his shop in Terre Haute until at least 1877.
