Wheelock P. Bingham
Wheelock P. Bingham
Indianapolis, Indiana circa 1859-1875
A prominent jeweler and silver manufacturer of Indianapolis, Bingham was working in that city by 1859. By 1860, he had formed a partnership with Joseph H. Sprague, being known as W.P. Bingham & Co. W.P. Bingham was a native of New York, born circa 1835. In 1860 he had assets of one thousand dollars. The firm remained intact until 1879 when Joseph Sprague apparently left the business, and Bingham was joined by Julius Walk (who had likely worked for the company for several years) and a Mr. Mayhew, the “company” being known as Bingham, Walk & Mayhew. Silverware of good quality bearing the mark of W.P. Bingham has been seen. Of particular interest is a massive coin silver watch case marked Bingham. The firm of Bingham, Walk and Mayhew was still in business in 1881.
