John Hammer Allison was born January 11,1825 in Chenango, New York. He moved to Detroit, Michigan around 1852 where he worked as a silversmith, watchmaker and jeweler. He is credited with the design of his distinctive 3/4 plate pocket watch movement. He worked 1845-1850 as a jeweler in Pontiac,  Michigan, selling out to his brother in 1848. He appeared on the 1850 Pontiac census as a jeweler and again in the 1860 Detroit census. He eventually settling in Elkhart, Indiana, listed as a jeweler in the 1900 census.
